Climb SEND
What to Expect - our group for SEND climbers
In Guernsey, our group for SEND climbers is for children aged between 5 and 11 years old. It runs every Saturday during term time at the indoor climbing wall in St Sampsons High School (SSHS).
Group 1 runs from 1145 to 1215 and Group 2 runs from 1220 to 1250. You will be notified which group your child is in, and numbers are kept low to ensure the children are well supported. Sessions are unstructured and ‘child led’, with each child being given the opportunity to roped climb, if they want to.
The sessions are run by a qualified instructor, who is fully insured, first-aid trained and DBS checked. Climb has been granted permission to operate by HSE Guernsey, following inspection and scrutiny of its safety and risk management procedures. Climb is also a quality assured partner of Bailiwick Social Prescribing, a member organisation of the Youth Commission and has been awarded SportsMark by the Guernsey Sports Commission.
Each child must have at least one parent or carer attending the session, who remains responsible for the child during the session. In particular please ensure that your child doesn’t leave the room unaccompanied and doesn’t climb unroped above the yellow line on the climbing wall.
Prior to climbing you will be required to complete one of our consent forms for your child, which includes a section for sharing any impairments, disabilities or medical conditions with us as well as an acknowledgement of risk. With this information we can ensure that the session is suitably designed for your needs and that any risks are safely addressed. No form - no climbing!
A consent from will also be required for any parent or carer wishing to ‘model’ climbing for their child.
Climb is able to provide all climbing equipment. Your child will need to put a climbing harness on so make sure they wear unrestrictive clothing such as trousers, shorts or leggings. The wall can be very warm, especially in summer. Snug fitting trainers can be used to climb in, or there are also a small selection of climbing shoes to borrow.
In the interests of safety, we ask for long hair to be tied back, and for jewellery and loose clothing to be removed. Rings will also need to be removed or taped over.
Bring a drink, snack and suitable toys if you want to.
The indoor wall is on the first floor in SSHS. Please go in through the main front entrance to the school then turn left, just past reception. Toilet facilities are just behind reception. Follow the corridor until you get to the canteen area. If it is your first session we will usually meet you here 5 minutes before the session starts and take you upstairs.
There are often other climbing sessions happening just before these sessions, so if you arrive early we won’t be able to let you in! We ask that you leave promptly at the end of the session so we can get ready for the next group.
We generally charge £2 per session, payable each half term and regardless of how many sessions are actually attended. We will send an invoice, please do not bring cash.
If you will be unable to attend your climbing session please let us know as soon as possible.
