Indoor climbing at SSHS
What to Expect - indoor climbing at St Sampsons High School (SSHS)
In Guernsey, all of our indoor sessions take place at the indoor climbing wall in SSHS.
They are run by qualified instructors, who are fully insured, first-aid trained and DBS checked. Climb has been granted permission to operate by HSE Guernsey, following inspection and scrutiny of its safety and risk management procedures. Climb is also a quality assured partner of Bailiwick Social Prescribing, a member organisation of the Youth Commission and has been awarded SportsMark by the Guernsey Sports Commission.
Prior to climbing you will be required to complete one of our consent forms, which includes a section for sharing any impairments, disabilities or medical conditions with us as well as an acknowledgement of risk. With this information we can ensure that the session is suitably designed for your needs and that any risks are safely addressed. No form - no climbing!
Climb is able to provide all climbing equipment. You will need to put a climbing harness on so make sure to wear unrestrictive clothing such as trousers, shorts or leggings. The wall can be very warm, especially in summer. Snug fitting trainers can be used to climb in, or there are also a small selection of climbing shoes to borrow.
In the interests of safety, we ask for long hair to be tied back, and for jewellery and loose clothing to be removed. Rings will also need to be removed or taped over.
Bring a drink and a snack if you want to.
The indoor wall is on the first floor in St Sampsons High School. Please go in through the main front entrance to the school then turn left, just past reception. Toilet facilities are just behind reception. Follow the corridor until you get to the canteen area. We will usually meet you here 5 minutes before the session starts and take you upstairs.
Parents or carers are welcome to watch if it is helpful to their young person, but please keep quiet, the room can easily become too noisy! Generally, once the young person is comfortable, it is helpful to the group if parents/carers do not remain in the room. You are always welcome to come back 10 minutes early, at the end of the session, to watch.
A typical session will usually start with a floor based warm up, then some easy climbing, before getting on with the main climbing activity.
At the end of the session, parents or carers will have to come up to the wall to collect their young person. We cannot let young people leave unaccompanied, unless by prior arrangement.
We generally charge £1 per session for young people and £5 per session for adults. We will send an invoice, please do not bring cash.
If you will be unable to attend your climbing session please let us know as soon as possible.
